Crypto researcher Chainalysis himself a victim of hackers

Blockchain analytics company Chainalysis has fallen victim to a cyber attack. The company, which is known for detecting stolen crypto coins and suspicious transactions, confirmed Friday that certain customer data had been exposed. According to Chainalysis, sensitive research data and login credentials have not been affected.

Chainalysis itself announced that it was the target of a cyber attack. According to the company, some non-sensitive customer data has been exposed.

The preliminary investigation does not show that hackers gained access to research data, passwords or active login sessions.

The company has engaged external security experts to further investigate the attack. In addition, Chainalysis uses artificial intelligence to monitor its security and discover possible vulnerabilities.

All customers have now been informed. Exactly how much data was captured and who was behind the attack has not yet been disclosed. Chainalysis emphasizes that the incident is not related to the recent billion-dollar hack at crypto exchange Binance.

Remarkably, the cyber attack came shortly after Chainalysis published new research results on North Korean hackers.

According to the company, hackers suspected to be linked to North Korea are responsible for almost 89 percent of all reported financial losses due to crypto hacks this year. In 2021, that share was still at fifteen percent.

Chainalysis also recently investigated a network of Russian intermediaries that helped North Korean IT staff convert millions of dollars in crypto coins into traditional money.

In addition, the company, along with other security researchers, pointed to the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor as the possible culprit behind the recent Binance hack of about $6.3 billion. There are no indications that the cyber attack on Chainalysis is related to these investigations.
