Crypto alarm clock: Bitcoin down, oil and bonds cause fear
Bitcoin is falling sharply, while oil, interest rates and volatility are taking a big leap. Are we looking at a serious threat?
The Bitcoin price has been hit hard in the past 24 hours and fell by more than 1.5 percent. This brings Bitcoin to about $81,500 this morning. On Wednesday night, Bitcoin still traded above $84,000. Clearly, the downward pressure is high right now.
Let it be clear that these are generally red days at the fair. The Bitcoin price is falling, but gold and silver are also under attack, as are the major stock market indices. The market clearly doubts the AI narrative and seems to be giving up cautiously.
This is special, because the quarterly figures for Q3 2026 are still above expectations for the time being. Even that does not seem to be enough at the moment to give the fair a helping hand.
At the moment, the market seems to give the most weight to the idea that rising oil prices and bond yields are a serious problem. A problem with which something has to be done before prices can rise further.
Worryingly, for example, two key indicators of financial market volatility are rising sharply at the same time.
In the upper part of the graph we see the move index. This represents the volatility in the US bond market. A sharp increase in this is often negative for stocks, gold and Bitcoin (BTC).
Yesterday, this index jumped by more than 10 percent. However, this was accompanied by an increase of almost 15 percent for the VIX, which represents volatility on the S&P 500.
That's a dangerous situation. So far, the move index has only risen. Recently, the VIX has also been added. If they rise together, it actually means that the agility and unpredictability in the entire financial system increases.
This is usually a combination that causes sharp price drops. So we have to hope that the market will soon find a certain calm again. The big question is where it should come from.
