An American will be the next pontiff. Cardinal Robert Francis Provost has been elected as the 267th Pope. He will now be known as Pope Leo XIVth, and he’s the first US-born Pope. Provost, 69 years old, he’s from Chicago. He’s a graduate of Villanova University in Philadelphia, and he spent much of his career as a missionary in South America. He served as a bishop in Peru, and he most recently led a powerful Vatican office for bishop appointments. Provost was elected by Catholic cardinals on the fourth ballot of the conclave in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. Addressing the crowd in St. Peter’s Square, Leo paid tribute to the late Pontiff Francis, urging the crowd to remember his predecessor’s legacy before outlining his vision for the Catholic Church.
