NASA’s original plan was for the astronauts to stay on the space station a little over a week, and then take the Boeing spacecraft back to Earth. Officials deemed the return trip too risky for the astronauts as problems arose with the Starliner’s propulsion system, though the ship successfully flew back on its own in early September. President Trump celebrated the return mission saying in a post on Truth Social that he spoke with NASA’s acting head to approve bringing the astronauts home two weeks earlier than previously scheduled.
